Quick Answer
The Peco Greenhouse Thermostat lets you automate a fan or heater to keep your kennel at a safe temperature. This guide walks through wiring, placement, and settings.
Why Use a Greenhouse Thermostat in a Kennel
Dog kennels often lack the insulation and ventilation of a house, so temperatures can swing fast. A greenhouse thermostat is built to handle damp, dusty conditions and can switch between heating and cooling modes, making it a practical choice for year-round kennel climate control.
Choosing the Right Equipment to Pair
The thermostat can control a 16-amp device at 110V or a 12-amp device at 220V. That covers most box fans, exhaust fans, and small space heaters. Avoid pairing it with high-amperage equipment like a whole-kennel HVAC unit unless you add a relay.
Step-by-Step Setup for Kennel Ventilation
- Mount the Thermostat: Place the thermostat at dog height, away from direct sun, drafts from doors, and water spray. A wall in the main kennel area works best. Use the included screws and ensure the housing is level. A common mistake is mounting it too high—dogs experience temperature at ground level.
- Wire the Power Source: Turn off power at the breaker. Connect the hot (black) wire from your power source to the thermostat's LINE terminal. Connect the neutral (white) wire to the NEUTRAL terminal. The ground wire goes to the green ground screw. Double-check that power is off before touching any wires. Use wire nuts and electrical tape for secure connections.
- Connect the Fan or Heater: Run a wire from the thermostat's LOAD terminal to the hot wire of your fan or heater. Connect the neutral from the device to the same neutral bundle as the power source. This completes the circuit so the thermostat switches the device on and off. If the device runs constantly, the LOAD and LINE wires might be reversed—swap them and test again.
- Set the Mode and Temperature: Use the slider switch to choose HEAT or COOL. In HEAT mode the device turns on when the temperature drops below the dial setting. In COOL mode it turns on when the temperature rises above the dial setting. Turn the dial to your target temperature. For a kennel, set COOL mode to around 80°F in summer and HEAT mode to 50°F in winter. Adjust based on your dog's breed and coat.
- Test the System: Restore power. If in COOL mode, hold a warm hand near the thermostat sensor (the small hole on the face) to simulate a higher temperature—the device should click on. For HEAT mode, hold an ice pack near the sensor to lower the reading. If nothing happens, check that the dial is turned past the current room temperature in the correct mode. The thermostat has a mechanical relay so you should hear a faint click.
Product Fact
- Peco Greenhouse Thermostat: Weather resistant and corrosion resistant, UL Listed and CSA Certified, with a temperature range of 40°F to 110°F. The weather-resistant housing and corrosion resistance mean it can be mounted inside a kennel or near a vent without failing from humidity or cleaning chemicals.
